Viterbo is located in the heart of the Tuscia area, approximately 80 km north of Rome. The main international hubs for reaching Viterbo are the two airports in Rome: Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino (FCO) and Ciampino (CIA).
Below you will find detailed instructions on how to reach the confer- ence venue using public or private transportation.
From Fiumicino Airport (FCO)
From Fiumicino Airport Station: take the FL1 Regional Train (Destination: Orte or Fara Sabina).
Transfer: get off at Roma Trastevere station.
To Viterbo: from Roma Trastevere, take the FL3 Regional Train (Destination: Viterbo Porta Romana).
Total travel time: approx. 2h 30m.
Total cost: approx. €13.00.
From Ciampino Airport (CIA)
Since Ciampino Airport does not have a dedicated train station inside the terminal, you have three main ways to reach the train lines to Viterbo:
Option A: The “Airlink“ (Bus + Train)
Shuttle bus: take the “Ciampino Airlink” bus from the airport square to Ciampino Railway Station (5-10 min).
Train to Rome: board any train to Roma Termini (15 min).
To Viterbo: from Roma Termini, follow the “From Rome City Cen- ter” instructions below.
Total cost: approx. €2.70 (to Termini).
Option B: Direct Shuttle Bus to Rome Center)
Several private companies (Terravision, SIT Bus Shuttle, Rome Airport Bus) operate direct lines.
Bus: take a shuttle bus directly to Roma Termini (approx. 40-60 min depending on traffic).
To Viterbo: from Roma Termini, follow the “From Rome City Cen- ter” instructions below.
Total cost: approx. €6.00 (to Termini).
Option C: Taxi or private transfer
Taxi: a taxi from Ciampino to Roma Ostiense or Roma Trastevere station (to catch the FL3 line directly).
To Viterbo: take the FL3 train to Viterbo Porta Romana.
Total cost: fixed fare to Rome center is approx. €35.00 + train ticket.
Once you are in central Rome (Termini or other stations), you have two options to finish your journey
Option A: The FL3 Direct Line (Highly Recommended).
This line is the most convenient as it drops you at Viterbo Porta Romana, right next to the city center and the University. Departure stations: you can catch this train at Roma Ostiense, Roma Trastevere, or Roma San Pietro.
How to get there from Termini: take the Metro Line B (Direction: Laurentina) for 4 stops and get off at Piramide (which is connect- ed to Roma Ostiense station).
Frequency: every 30–60 minutes.
Ticket price: €5.10.
Option B: Via Orte (From Roma Termini).
Use this only if you are already at Termini and the timing for the FL3 line is inconvenient.
Take a regional train to Orte (approx. 45 min).
Change at Orte for a local train to Viterbo Porta Fiorentina (approx. 40 min).
Total cost: €6.00 - €9.00.
To reach Viterbo from Florence by public transport, the most efficient route is by train with a change at Orte Station.
Step 1: From Florence to Orte
Take a Regional Veloce (RV) train from Firenze Santa Maria Novella (SMN) to Orte.
Travel time: approximately 2h 15m.
Frequency: trains depart roughly every hour.
Tickets: can be purchased on Trenitalia.com or at the station.
Step 2: From Orte to the Conference Venue
Once you arrive at Orte, you have two main options to reach the University complex in Viterbo:
By Train (recommended)
This is the most convenient option as the station is very close to the venue.
Destination station: Viterbo Porta Romana.
Travel time: approx. 45–50 minutes.
Tickets: can be purchased on Trenitalia.com or at the station.
By Cotral Bus
The bus departs from the square outside Orte Station. Destination stop: ask for “Viterbo Porta Romana”.
Travel time: approx. 45 minutes.
Walking to the venue: the stop is located just a few steps from the University entrance (see next).
Key departure times (morning): 08:10, 08:45, 09:10, 09:30. You must buy your bus ticket before boarding (at the station’s Tabacchi shop or via the Cotral App). Tickets are not sold on board.
Private Transfers & Car Rental
For those traveling in groups or seeking a more comfortable and di- rect journey, private options are highly recommended.
Private transfer (NCC):
This is the most efficient option for groups of 3–8 people.
How to book: you can find several providers online by searching for “NCC Roma Viterbo” or “Transfer Fiumicino Viterbo”. We rec- ommend booking at least 48 hours in advance.
Cost: approximately €130 – €160 (for a standard sedan) or €180 – €220 (for a minivan).
Official taxis in Rome:
If you are in Rome city center and need a taxi to reach the train stations (Trastevere or Ostiense), use only official white taxis. How to call a taxi: Phone: +39 06 3570 or +39 06 0606 (Official City of Rome service); App: download FreeNow or itTaxi. These apps work like Uber and allow you to pay via credit card.
Taxi from airport: there are fixed fares from the airports to cen- tral Rome, but for Viterbo, the price will be metered and usually higher than a pre-booked NCC.
Car rental:
All major companies (Hertz, Avis, Sixt, etc.) are available at Fiumi- cino and Ciampino.
Driving to Viterbo: the journey takes about 1h 15m.
Parking: most of Viterbo’s historic center is a Restricted Traffic Zone. We recommend parking at Parcheggio di Valle Faul (large and often free/cheap) or checking with your hotel for a permit.
Important tips for travelers
Last trains of the day
Check the evening schedule: The last direct train to Viterbo (FL3 line) usually departs from Roma Trastevere around 9:15 PM. If your flight lands at Fiumicino after 19:30 (7:30 PM), you may not have enough time to catch the final connection. In this case, we strongly recommend booking a private transfer (NCC) or planning an over- night stay in Rome.
Always check real-time schedules on the Trenitalia website or app.
Buying your ticket
Where to buy: You can purchase tickets at the au- tomated machines at the airport or train stations, or at authorized “Tabacchi” shops and newsstands.
Online Purchase: The easiest way is via the Trenitalia App or the official website. You can pay with credit card, Google Pay, or Apple Pay.
Mandatory ticket validation
Paper tickets: If you have a physical ticket, you must validate it using the green or yellow machines located near the platforms be- fore boarding. Failure to validate your ticket may result in a signif- icant fine.
Digital tickets: Tickets purchased via the Trenitalia App or web- site are automatically validated at the scheduled departure time of the train you selected.
